Established in 1976, the 4,000-acre Mendenhall Wetlands State Game Refuge covers nine miles of Gastineau Channel shore providing a vital feeding and resting area for both resident birds and migrants traveling to and from their Arctic breeding grounds. Sockeye, coho, chum and pink salmon, Dolly Varden char, and cutthroat trout can be found in the Refuge’s 17 freshwater streams. Mammals that consider this Refuge home include black bears, river otters, hawks, falcons, red squirrels, harbor seals, porcupines, owls, northern sea lions, and humpback whales. Waterfowl hunting, hiking, wildlife viewing and photography, boating, fishing, scientific and educational studies, and sightseeing are just some of the popular activities to enjoy.
