Once two mines, the Alaska Free Gold (Martin) Mine on Skyscraper Mountain and Independence Mine on Granite Mountain, a merger in 1938 established the Alaska-Pacific Consolidated Mining Company (APC). APC became the largest producer in the Willow Creek Mining District with 83 mining claims. Independence Mine operated because of the presence of sheelite instead of gold after the United States entered World War II but was closed in 1943. Independence Mine is listed on the National Register of Historic Places because of its cultural resources which are significant to American history. The park in the Talkeetna Mountains consists of abandoned buildings and machinery of a hard rock gold mining operation.
