Historic Shorter Cemetery
Riverside Drive
Eufaula, AL 36027

Situated among five acres on a bluff overlooking Lake Eufaula, near the Shorter home which burned in 1885; this Civil War-era cemetery is where Governor John Gill Shorter and his family; including his father, the General Reuben Clark Shorter; and his family's slaves are buried. The Alabama Historical Commission & Alabama Trust for Historic Preservation has it listed as one of Alabama's most endangered sites due to vandalism and natural deterioration of the tombstones, statues, walls, and fencing. The cemetery is not open to the public, but can be visited during the annual Pilgrimage.
