    Established in 1911 by presidential proclamation, this national monument protects and preserves the Devils Postpile formation, the 101-foot high Rainbow Falls, and pristine mountain scenery. The formation of Devils Postpile began when basalt lava erupted in the valley of the Middle Fork of the San Joaquin River and it is a rare sight in the geologic world, ranking as one of the world’s finest examples of columnar basalt.
