The largest library in the world, this library is also the oldest federal cultural institution in the nation and it serves as the research arm of Congress. Nearly 128 million items on approximately 530 miles of bookshelves are featured at the library with collections including over 29 million books and other printed materials, almost three million recordings, 12 million photographs, close to five million maps, and 57 million manuscripts.
