The museum of the American Architectural Foundation, this museum is the oldest museum in the United States devoted to architecture and design. The building was designed by Dr. William Thornton for Colonel John Tayloe III and was constructed between 1799 and 1801. It served as executive mansion for President Madison after the Brittish burned the White House in 1814.
