Restored by The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, the Surratt House Museum was not only the country home of Mary Surratt, the first woman to be executed by the United States government after being found guilty of conspiring with John Wilkes Booth to assassinate Abraham Lincoln, but it has served as a tavern, post office, polling place, and a safehouse for the Confederate underground during the Civil War. It presents a variety of programs and events and houses an extensive library and gift shop. The museum is open for public tours January through mid-December.
