Established in 1963, this park adjacent Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary consists of 70 nautical square miles of coral reefs, seagrass beds and mangrove swamps. The first undersea park created in the United States, the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park allows guests to enjoy such activities as snorkeling, scuba diving, fishing, glassbottom boat tours, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, walking and picnicking. A 47-site RV and tent campground is also on site and kayak and canoe rentals are available. The Visitor Center features a 30,000 gallon saltwater aquarium and other natural history exhibits interpreting the park's unique marine environment.
