Consisting of 54 acres, this National Historic Landmark "played a significant role in Florida's early development." Named after U.S. President Zachary Taylor, this fortress served as headquarters for the U.S. Navy's East Gulf Coast blockade squadron during the Civil War. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Fort Taylor was also used during the Spanish-American War. Excavations for old armaments in the gun rooms in the 1960's uncovered a number of guns and ammunition from the Civil War era. The buried arsenal is the largest collection of Civil War cannons in the U.S. Tours of the historic fort are offered daily at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. "Serving up Key West’s finest beach cuisine," the Cayo Hueso Café is open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily.
