Historic Bok Sanctuary (circa 1922)
1151 Tower Boulevard • Lake Wales, FL 33853
863-676-1408
A National Historic Landmark, this beautiful sanctuary was a gift in 1929 from Dutch immigrant Edward Bok in appreciation for the opportunities he had been given as an American. Inspired by the dramatic vistas atop peninsular Florida’s highest point, he wanted to create a bird sanctuary. Bok hired famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. to transform the acreage into a beautiful woodland garden. Once the gardens began to take shape, Bok hired the finest artisans of the day to create a majestic marble and coquina belltower a 60-bell carillon. Today, it is a sanctuary for wildlife, plants and the human spirit. Also featured is Pinewood Estate, a 20-room Mediterranean Revival mansion. Historic Bok Sanctuary offers Florida’s most abundant opportunities for aesthetic, cultural and personal enrichment that inspire all who visit. Carillon recitals at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. daily. A nature preserve and trail, visitor center and museum, cafe and gift shop are also on site. more... map
