Historic Homes & Buildings

Log Cabin, The 708 1/2 Broadway, Columbus, GA 31906, 706-323-7979, Considered to be the oldest structure in Muscogee County, this two century year old cabin is a great example of a dwelling used by traders in the early 1800's prior to the settlement of Columbus and was built when the influence of Indian house styles was still present. map

Pemberton House, The (circa 1840) 11 Seventh Street, Columbus, GA 31901, 706-323-7979, This simple four room Greek Revival cottage was the home of Dr. John Stith Pemberton and his family until 1860. Dr. Pemberton, who was a pharmacist in Columbus and later in Atlanta, was the originator of the formula for Coca-Cola. The cottage features an apothecary shop and has been carefully furnished to approximate the surroundings in which Dr. Pemberton worked. Coca-Cola Company momentos, pharmaceutical items, a soda fountain, and advertisements of Dr. Pemberton's are some of the items on display in the cottage. map

Walkers-Peters-Langdon House (circa 1828) 716 Broadway, Columbus, GA 31906, 706-323-7979, A simple Federal style cottage that is considered the oldest house in the original city and believed to be a prefabricated house. The original kitchen is located in the basement and period outbuildings, a slave cabin which housed ten to fifteen slaves, and gardens planted with period flowers and herbs are also on site. map

Woodruff Farm House (circa 1840's) 708 Broadway, Columbus, GA 31906, 706-323-7979, Now housing the offices of Historic Columbus Foundation's Riverfest Weekend and Heritage Tours, this double pen structure house, a house that has two front doors, also serves as a house museum which contains displays depicting the area's history. map

Andersonville National Historic Site (circa 1864) 496 Cemetery Road, Columbus, GA 31711, Located in Andersonville, 229-924-0343, The only park in the National Park System to serve as a memorial to all Americans ever held as prisoners of war, this unique historic site was officially known as Camp Sumter and was the largest of the many Confederate military prisons that were established during the Civil War. During the 14 months it existed, more than 45,000 Union soldiers were confined here. Leopold Disaster Monument Located at Sacrifice Field in Fort Benning, 706-322-1613, This is a monument honoring those who died in the SS Leopold Disaster.

Little White House (circa 1932) 401 Little White House Road, Columbus, GA 31830, Located in Warm Springs, 706-655-5870, Franklin Delano Roosevelt built this house while he was Governor of New York and the house and furnishings have been carefully preserved very much as Roosevelt left them in 1945 when he died. A museum is adjacent to the house which displays memorabilia collected in Roosevelt's honor and visitors can also see the on site guest house, servants' quarters, and garage while at this site. more... map
