Sautee-Nacoochee Indian Mound
Sautee-Nacoochee, GA 30571
706-878-2181
Thought to have originally been built by the mysterious and ancient Moundbuilders culture, this mound later served as the center of the ancient Cherokee town of Gauxule, which is said, in legend, to have been visited by the Spanish explorer De Soto in 1540 during his quest for gold. This mound, which is 190 feet long, 150 feet wide, and 20 feet tall, was the site of the Gauxule's Town House, where a perpetual flame burned and where ceremonial dances and other rituals were performed.
