Once a Revolutionary War fort, this National Historic Landmark and Georgia's oldest standing brick fortification saw military service during the War of 1812, but primarily during the America Civil War, serving as the headquarters for the river defenses of the Confederacy. The fort contains many original artifacts, a theater presentation, and artifacts from the C.S.S. Georgia Ironclad ship which rests 40 feet in the Savannah River in front of the fort.
