Established in 1985, to preserve and enhance seabird nesting colonies, Kīlauea Point National Wildlife Refuge is "home to some of the largest populations of nesting seabirds in the main Hawaiian Islands" and the historic Kīlauea Point Lighthouse. Built in 1913, as a navigational aid for commercial shipping between Hawaii and Asia, Kilauea Point Lighthouse guided ships and boats safely along Kauai's rugged north shore for over 60 years. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors can see spinner dolphins, Hawaiian monk seals, native Hawaiian coastal plants and the endangered Hawaiian goose.
