This national park covers 30,183 acres, of which 24,719 acres are designated wilderness preserves, and is dedicated to preserving the outstanding volcanic landscape of the upper slopes of Haleakala. The on site Haleakala Crater, known as Maui's "House of the Sun," is the world's largest dormant volcano and is large enough to fit the island of Manhattan.
