Built in the “Steamboat Gothic” style, the Opera House was originally home to City Hall, the public library, the fire department and a second-floor auditorium that seats 412. It soon welcomed touring vaudeville, minstrel and dramatic companies. Later the Opera House became the Chicago area’s first summer stock theatre and eventually evolved into a cultural center. Notables such as Paul Newman, Tom Bosley, Betsy Palmer, Geraldine Page, Shelley Berman and Lois Nettleton have performed on its stage. Today the Opera House continues to be a venue for top national and international acts, as well as local theater productions.
