Historic Homes & Buildings

Wilson-Vaughan Historic Hostess House (circa 1900) 723 Fourth St., Marion, IN 46953, 675-664-3755, Listed on the State and National Register of Historic Places, this historically significant house is one of Grant County's treasures and hosts many cultural events throughout the year. Lunch is served here Monday through Friday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. map

Cumberland Covered Bridge (circa 1877) Corner of Third & Front Sts., Matthews, 765-998-2372, This 181 foot covered timbered bridge spans the Mississinewa River and is Grant County's last remaining covered bridge.

James Dean Birthsite Corner of Fourth & McClure Sts., 765-668-5435, At this corner stood the house, known as the "Seven Gables", where James Dean was born on February 8, 1931. The house no longer stands but there is a stone with a plaque and a star on the sidewalk marking the spot.

Marion National Cemetery 1700 38th Street, Marion, IN 46953, 765-674-0284, Originally intended as a simple burial plot for the aged men at the national soldiers' home, this cemetery is open to anyone who served honorably in the US military, as well as to their spouses and children.

Miami Indian Cemetery 3750 County Road 600, Marion, IN 46952, 765-668-5435, Confirmed to the Meshingomesia Indians by the US in the Treaty of 1840, this cemetery is the largest Indian cemetery in Indiana and is the burial site of Miami chief Meshingomesia and members of his tribe. An 1860's Indian schoolhouse still stands on the property. map

Mississinewa Battlefield Seven miles north of Marion on State Rd. 15, This battlefield was the site of the first victory of the US Army during the War of 1812 where, on December 17th and 18th, 1812, a 600-man mounted force attacked and destroyed four Brittish-allied Indian villages.
