Since 1950, the official tree lighting ceremony for "the Christmas City of the High Plains" has taken place on the Saturday night following Thanksgiving. This event also include a visit from Santa Claus, horse drawn wagon rides, musical entertainment, soup suppers, and shopping in the downtown businesses.
