I wonder how many people know, if any, that The Garden Cafe formerly known as "Rebels Rest" was built in 1790 for Andre Janvier who changed his name to Andrew January. It was later sold to Dr Benjamin Winslow Dudley head of Transylvania University. The then large adjoining building (likely now next door) was named "Fairl'awn". Next General William Thomas Withers bought the property and maintained a large successful horse farm there. Miss Rebel Withers the General's daughter was the name sake for "Rebels Rest" ...



In 1946 Dr and Col Halbert bought Rebels Rest and opened their antique shop entitled Rebels Rest Antiques. Dr Halbert rented antiques to the movies such as Davy Crockett, Raintree County, to name a few. Their customers were Barbra Streisand, JoAnn Woodward and many others.



So when you visit the Garden Cafe you have also stepped back into history.
