Situated between Breaux Bridge and Lafayette, Louisiana, 9,500 acres of important cypress-tupelo swamp and bottomland hardwood forest habitat is protected. Each year, thousands of visitors come to Cypress Island to witness the wading bird rookery in the Preserve from March through June. The Visitor Center is open from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on weekends year-round and Wednesday through Sunday in the Spring. Lake Martin, the preserve's main visitor attraction, is approached by two paved roads, Highway 353 from Lafayette and Highway 31 from Breaux Bridge.
