Thought to be the first Catholic church in the United States built and supported by people of color, St. Augustine was built with funds provided by Cane River Creole patriarch, Nicolas Augustine Metoyer, and his brother. Metoyer, Carroll Jones, and Clementine Hunter are buried in the cemetery behind the church.
