A favorite spot for painters, this lovely garden features a statue monument in the center of the garden park that was erected in honor of French mariners who died while nursing New Orleans' citizens during a yellow fever outbreak. The statue, called the Sacred Heart of Jesus, has inscriptions in French that read, when translated: "To the memory of thirty seamen, members of the crew of the Steam Corvette, Tonnerre, of the Imperial French Navy, who died at the Quarantine of New Orleans in August 1857. Erected by order of His Excellency, Admiral Hamelin, Minister of the Navy of Emperor Napoleon Ill." The Degas House offer remarkable tours filled with fascinating history. Degas resided in this House (1872 - 1873) with his maternal relatives, the Musson Family, whose business was cotton. While residing in his family in the House, Degas created at least twenty-two works of art including the detailed scene of Michel Musson's office. The tour highlights two of the Artist's most famous works. Guided tours are conducted by appointment only and is approximately an hour long including the documentary, “Degas in New Orleans, a Creole Sojourn.” Suggested donations are $5 for students and children, $8 for senior citizens and $10 for adults.
