Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this was the winter home of acclaimed American actor Joseph Jefferson, known for his portrayal of Rip Van Winkle, a role he played more than 4,500 times. Surrounded by the Rip Van Winkle Gardens, this 22-room mansion reflects Moorish, Steamboat Gothic, French and Southern Plantation styles and features a fourth-story cupola, 350-year-old-oak trees, heirlooms, period paintings, rare Louisiana pieces, and fine examples of American and French Empire furniture. Tours of the gardens and mansion begin on the hour from 9:00 a.m to 4:00 p.m., seven days a week.
