Considered the heart of the city, it was a military parade ground referred to as Place d'Armes until 1848. A statue was placed in memorial to Andrew Jackson, hero of the Battle of New Orleans, and the square was named in his honor. Artists displaying their paintings surround the outer boundaries of the square that is now a home for artists, shops, businesses, and restaurants.
