Bayou Plaquemine was an important waterway from the Mississippi River to the interior of Louisiana from the 1800's to the mid-1900's. In the late 1800's, Congress authorized the construction of a lock here. Designed by Col. George W. Goethals, later the chief engineer of the design and construction of the Panama Canal, construction on the lock began in 1895 and ended in 1909. This state historic site is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and includes a museum, visitors’ center, and an open air pavilion.
