Nicholls State University, with its 166-acre campus overlooking Bayou Lafourche, is the biggest employer in the city of Thibodaux. The school was founded in 1948 and named for Thibodaux resident and two-term governor Francis T. Nicholls (1834 - 1912). The school has grown to emcompass eighty-eight degree programs offered through four senior academic colleges.
