Built to house the first African Baptist Church of Boston and the first African American Baptist church created north of the Mason Dixon Line, the African Meeting House is now the oldest extant black church building in America. The meeting house, a National Historic Landmark, served as a recruitment post for the Massachusetts 54th Volunteer Regiment in 1863.
