The Old State House on Boston's Freedom Trail is "the oldest and most important public building in American history prior to the Revolution, where John Adams insisted, “Independence was born.”" With a "floating" spiral staircase and special architectural details located throughout, this National Historic Landmark is "the oldest surviving public building in Boston," built to house the government offices of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. It stands on the site of Boston's first Town House of 1657-8, which was destroyed by fire in 1711.
