Located across Beacon Street from the State House, this Augustus Saint-Gaudens-designed memorial commemorates the first African American regiment that served in the Civil War. With Colonel Shaw shown on horseback with three rows of infantry men marching behind him, the scene depicts the 54th Regiment marching down Beacon Street on May 28, 1863 as they left Boston to head south. Paid for by private donations, the monument was unveiled in a ceremony on May 31, 1897. In 1982, 64 names of known soldiers who died at the Battle of Fort Wagner were inscribed on the back of the monument.
