Historic Homes & Buildings

Captain Penniman House Fort Hill Road, Eastham, MA 02642, 508-349-3785, This historic house was built in the mid-Nineteenth Century by an affluent whaling captain; now refurbished, the house is open to tours and features many original period items.

Swift-Daley House (circa 1741) Route 6, Eastham, MA 02642, 508-240-1247, This historic structure was originally the home of meat-packing pioneer Nathaniel Swift, and was constructed near the middle of the Eighteenth Century; the house exemplifies characteristics that epitomize typical houses from the region and time period in question, such as wide floorboards, large fireplaces, and a narrow staircase that is reminiscent of the type of staircase that was found in the cabins of ships in the Eighteenth Century. The house now features eight rooms that showcase period furnishings, clothing, antiques and artifacts that date from the Colonial through the Victorian periods.


Historic Sites & Monuments

Old Eastham Windmill (circa 1680) Route 6, Eastham, MA 02642, 508-240-5900, Originally constructed by Thomas Paine in Plymouth in 1680, and then moved to Eastham in 1793, this windmill is the oldest working historical windmill on Cape Cod, and is still occasionally used to grind corn.


Museums & Galleries

Old Schoolhouse Museum (circa 1869) 6 Nauset Road, Eastham, MA 02642, 508-255-0788, Built in the Nineteenth Century, this one-room schoolhouse now serves as a museum that presents exhibits that document the history of the region, including a model schoolroom, household and framing items and implements, treasures that have been salvaged from shipwrecks, both paper and coined antique currency, and the thirteen-foot jawbone of a sixty-five-foot Finback Whale.  map

Salt Pond Visitor Center Route 6, Eastham, MA 02642, 508-255-3421, Along with a popular recreation of a Native American village, this museum and visitor center also features exhibits that elucidate the varied array of natural and cultural characteristics that are central to the history and nature of the Cape Cod region, as well as a bookstore and a theatre, which shows films that serve to educate visitors in regard to the history and environment of the area.  more...

Tool Museum Route 6, Eastham, MA 02642, 508-240-1247, This museum is located behind the historic Swift-Daley House, and features the display of hundreds of implements and tools from the region; some of the featured items are a foot-operated grindstone, a wooden crankshaft from an historic salt-works, doorposts from the original Eastham Meeting House, and cranberry sorters. Also on the site is the Dill Beach Shack that survived a storm in 1978 that almost decimated this area of the coast.
