One of 75 “cottages” built in Lenox during the Gilded Age, the restored Ventfort Hall is the Elizabethan Revival-style mansion that was built for Sarah Morgan, sister of J. P. Morgan. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Ventfort Hall is the home of the Gilded Age Museum. The Museum interprets the great changes that occurred in American life, industry, and society during the 19th century through lectures, exhibits, theatrical performances and other events. Ventfort Hall features a three-story great hall, staircase with wood paneling detailing, an elegant salon, a paneled library, dining room, billiard room, bowling alley, combined gas and electric light fixtures, an elevator, burglar alarms and central heating. The exterior of the Ventfort Hall mansion was used as the orphanage for the film adaptation of the John Irving novel Cider House Rules.
