The site of the former mountain estate of Civil War journalist and author, George Alfred Townsend, Gathland State Park contains many buildings and structures that were designed and constructed by Townsend. The park includes Crampton's Gap, a site of the Battle of South Mountain on September 14, 1862, making it the first major battle of the Civil War fought in Maryland. Gathland features the War Correspondent's Memorial Arch.
