The first native-born North American canonized saint and founder of the Sisters of Charity of Saint Joseph's, Elizabeth Ann Seton, lived here from 1809 until her death in 1821. Here she founded Saint Joseph's Academy and Free School, the first free Catholic School for girls staffed by sisters in the United States. Shrine sites visitors are able to see include a museum, the Basilica, where the remains of Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton are entombed; Stone House (circa 1786), White House (1810), and the cemetery which was her original burial place and the final resting place some of her family members and many of the early Sisters of Charity.
