Gathland State Park is located in Crampton's Gap, which saw a portion of the Battle of South Mountain, the first major Civil War battle fought in Maryland. The former mountain estate of Civil War journalist, George Alfred Townsend, Gathland State Park contains many buildings and structures that he designed and constructed. The circa 1885 Main Hall and Lodge were partially restored in 1958. Gathland features the War Correspondents Arch, a National Historic Monument constructed in 1896. Gathland State Park's museum contains many artifacts from Townsend's life, career and estate and artifacts from the Battle of South Mountain. The Appalachian National Scenic Trail passes through Gathland State Park.
