The fifth largest museum in the nation, The Detroit Institute of Arts was founded in 1885. It features over 100 galleries of art in a wide range of styles, from ancient to modern times. The first American museum to acquire a Van Gogh painting, DIA has "one of the largest, most significant art collections in the nation" with over 60,000 works. These include works of American, European, modern, contemporary, African, Asian, Native American, Oceanic, Islamic, and African American art.
