Pictured Rocks' sandstone cliffs, beaches, sand dunes, waterfalls, lakes, forest and more than 40 miles of Lake Superior shoreline is the perfect location to enjoy such seasonal activities as hiking, cross-country skiing, ice climbing, snowmobiling, ice fishing, snowshoeing, backcountry camping, and sightseeing. 42 miles of the North Country National Scenic Trail and three drive-in campgrounds at Little Beaver Lake, Twelvemile Beach and Hurricane River are within Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, named for its sandstone rock cliffs composed of Cambrian Sandstone, dating back about 500 million years.
