Highway 61 Blues Murals Crossroads of Highways 82 and 81, Leland, MS 38767, Located 9 Miles East, 662-686-2687, The Leland Blues Project has created several murals in downtown Leland chronicling the work of such legendary artists as Son Thomas, Willie Foster, Little Milton, Jimmy Reed and Eddie Cusic. Many of these greats started in Leland and traveled their journey to stardom.

Historic Homes & Buildings

Belmont Plantation Highway 1 South, Greenville, MS 38701, Wayside, MS, Built in 1857 by W. W. Worthington, this is one of the few antebellum homes in the Delta to survive the Civil War.

Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church and Seminary 422 East Gloster Street, Greenville, MS 38702, 662-332-0891, This Romanesque church was built in 1828 ad served as the first seminary in the country to instruct African-American priests. Tours of this historical sight are available.

Washington County Courthouse and Arboretum Corner of Washington Avenue and Edison Street, Greenville, MS 38702, 662-334-2651, The original courthouse which stood at this site was burned by Union troops during the Civil War. In 1890 the current courthouse was built and the area was landscaped with a beautiful variety of trees and plants. The lovely arboretum surrounds the courthouse and includes the noteworthy Confederate Monument.

Historic Sites & Monuments

Hebrew Union Temple 504 Main Street, Greenville, MS 38701, 662-332-4153, This site was dedicated in 1880 and the current temple was erected in 1906. The structure boasts exquisite stained glass and houses a museum detailing Greenville's rich Jewish history.

Live Oak Cemetery South Main Street at Cresent, 662-334-2711, Final resting place for many African-American soldiers and slaves.

Old Offices of the Delta Democrat Times Corner of Main and Walnut Streets, Greenville, MS 38702, In this historic structure, Pulitzer Prize winning editor, Hodding Carter, Hr., penned editorials and called ro racial and religious tolerance. The building, built in 1881, is part of the Main Street district.

Ruins of the St. John's Episcopal Church Lake Washington Road, Greenville, MS 38701, Located 1 Mile South of Glen Allan, St. John's was built around 1830 and stood as one of the first churches in the region. After the Civil War, when parts of the church was used to make mini balls, the building fell into ruin. Today the beautiful stonework can be visited and you may recognize the sight as one of the most photographed places in Mississippi.

Winterville Indian Mounds Highway 1 North, Greenville, MS 38703, 662-334-4684, Among North America's most significant pre-Columbian archeological sites, this was the site built by a Native American civilization that thrived from about A.D. 1000 to 1450 for sacred structures and ceremonies. It is an official state historic site listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is located six miles north of the intersection of Highways 82 and 1.

Delta Conservation and Demonstration Center 422 Feather Farms Road, Greenville, MS 38702, on the groundsof the Delta Regional Airport, 662-332-8616, This 638 acre facility operates as a unique place for living, growing and learning. The center offers an opportunity to view a working farm, learn about Delta region crops, enjoy bird watching and wildflowers, and see antique farm equipment.

Museums & Galleries

Birthplace of Kermit the Frog South Deer Creek Drive, East at Highway 82, Leland, MS 38756, Located Along Deer Creek, 662-686-2687, This exhibit commemorates Jim Henson, the creator of the Sesame Street characters and his delightful Muppets. Henson spent much of his childhood playing along the banks of Deer Creek which inspired him to create the character, Kermit the Frog. A gift shop is available and locals suggest you bring a bag lunch and relax in the park that surrounds the exhibit. map

Greenville Airforce Base Museum Mid Delta Regional Airport Mezzanine Level, 662-334-3121, Established in 1941, just one week after Pearl Harbor, the Greenville Army Flying School was the center of instruction for thousands of air personnel. This museum celebrates the men and women of the Air Force and tells their stories from World War II through the Cold War era.

Greenville History Museum 409 Washington Avenue, Greenville, MS 38701, 662-335-5802, Open Monday through Friday, this museum traces the history of the City of Greenville from the late 1800's. The facility is housed in the restored Miller Building, and offers a fascinating glimpse of history through a collection of memorabilia, photos, newspapers and more.
