"An archive and museum dedicated to the preservation, interpretation and dissemination of African-American history and culture," the Margaret Walker Center's main goal is to honor founder Margaret Walker's academic and artistic legacy through its archival collections, exhibits, and public programs. Housed in the historic 1903 Ayer Hall, which is the oldest structure on the Jackson State University campus and listed on the National Register of Historic Places;" the Center contains the papers of the late Margaret Walker and former U.S. Secretary of Education Roderick Paige and a large oral history department that includes the official collection of the Veterans of the Mississippi Civil Rights Movement. Museum and exhibit spaces that highlight the Center's collections and the history of Jackson State University are also offered.
