It was a sunny, clear, bitterly cold day in January of 1959 when Lonzo McCoy pulled his old car to the side of Nepanee Road. His white stubble shown in contrast to his dark, weathered skin and his grimace showed several missing teeth. Lonzo braced himself against the biting wind as he opened his car door and stepped out onto the wet gravel. He looked to the west where a copse of woods jutted out toward the road, and then to the east where the Bogue lay. The Bogue is a man-made canal designed to drain the Mississippi Delta region after floods from the Mississippi River. A huge berm of dredged soil ran along either side. Over the years the berm had become overgrown with broom sage and Johnson grass.

Lonzo pulled his old Winchester Model 12 shotgun from the car seat, racked a 1/O buckshot shell into the chamber and laid the shotgun over his shoulder with his forearm across the barrel. The sip of whiskey taken earlier still warmed his stomach, but the wind cut like a razor on his face and neck.

Lonzo was ancient and well known throughout this part of the Delta. He was a fixture as much as were the cotton and soybean fields. He was already old when he taught my brother-in-law to hunt, and twenty years older yet when he took me under his wing. Even then he would put me on his back as a eight year old and wade across water thigh deep in the mid of winter to keep me from getting wet. He was grizzled, strong and patient. While watching the T.V. show, American Pickers, the two antique dealers had a sign they had purchased and presented to a friend...the sign read, "Best Eats in Town, Leland Cafe". What awesome memories that brought back!
