A stately, 20-room Neoclassical Revival-style mansion. Part of the home served as headquarters during the Civil War for General Leonidas Polk, commander of troops who were charged with defending the east Mississippi area. On February 14, 1864, Union General William Tecumseh Sherman and 10,000 troops forced Polk and his troops to evacuate Meridian. Open daily for tours, the restored Merrehope is rented to the public for weddings, receptions, and other special occasions. Merrehope is one of 10 sites featured on the Meridian Civil War Trail.
