Historic Homes & Buildings

Auburn (circa 1812) Duncan at Auburn Avenue, 601-442-5981, This home is a mixture of a Federal style and an old Georgian style. It is a National Historic Landmark and was constructed by architect Levi Weeks for wealthy attorney Lyman Harding. The interior of the house is also a delightful mixture of styles and fashions. Tours are given daily.

Dunleith (circa 1856) 84 Homochitto Street, Natchez, MS 39120, 601-446-8500, Dunleith is a stately white colonnade surrounded by 40 acres of landscaped gardens. The home and landscaped gardens make for a beautiful wedding setting, with receptions easily accommodated on the grounds and catering by their on-site restaurant. House on Ellicott Hill, The 211 North Canal Street, Natchez, MS 39120, 601-442-2011, Deemed the architectural gem of Natchez, it occupies the site where in 1797 Major Andre Ellicott, on orders from George Washington, defied Spanish authority and raised the American flag for the first time in the Lower Mississippi Valley. map

Longwood (circa 1860-61) 140 Lower Woodville Road, Natchez, MS 39120, Longwoods' completion was halted by the Civil War, but what was completed is truly amazing. Its octagonal shape is very elaborate and it has been preserved in its incomplete state. Tours are given daily that explain the tale of how the house was not-to-be.

Magnolia Hall (circa 1858) 215 South Pearl Street, Natchez, MS 39120, 601-442-6672, Magnolia Hall was the last great mansion built before the Civil War. It is a very fine example of Greek Revival architecture. The Natchez Garden Club is in charge of the restoration and the home features a costume museum.

Melrose (circa 1849) 1 Melrose-Montebello Parkway, Natchez, MS 39120, Melrose is the most intact Antebellum estate in the nation. Owned by the National Park Service, the home still has its original hand-painted canvas flooring. During Pilgrimage, the original owner's wedding dress is displayed along with an amazing replica of her wedding cake. Tours take place at the top of the hour. map

Mount Locust Inn & Plantation (circa 1780s) Natchez Trace Parkway Milepost 15.5, Natchez, MS 39120, Located 15 Miles North of Natchez, One of the oldest structures in Mississippi, Mount Locust was an inn as well as a working cotton plantation on the old Natchez Trace. It has been fully restored and offers a look into how the area was when the Natchez Trace Parkway was a major thoroughfare. map

Rosalie Mansion (circa 1820-1822) 100 Orleans Street, Natchez, MS 39120, 601-445-5676, Owned and operated by the Mississippi State Society Daughters of the American Revolution, this famous Federal-style mansion is surrounded by a four-acre park overlooking the mighty Mississippi River. Used as the Union Army's headquarters during their occupation of Natchez during the Civil War, Rosalie is one of the few antebellum mansions in the South that is filled with furniture, paintings and clothes used by the very family that lived in Rosalie for more than 100 years ago. more... map

St. Mary's Basilica (circa 1840) 107 South Union Street, Natchez, MS 39120, 601-445-5617, Although it no longer holds "cathedral status", it is the oldest Catholic building in use in Mississippi. It was built in Gothic Revival style and has a beautifully ornate interior. map

Stanton Hall (circa 1857) 401 High Street, Natchez, MS 39120, This palatial mansion is one of the most impressive of antebellum America. There is an enormous entry hall and gilded French mirrors line the parlor. It is furnished with antiques and many of the original pieces from the family. map

Trinity Episcopal Church (circa 1822) 305 South Commerce Street, Natchez, MS 39120, 601-445-8432, The oldest church building in Natchez and the oldest existing Episcopal church building in Mississippi, the Federal-style Trinity Episcopal Church's interior includes two rare art-glass windows designed and installed by Louis Comfort Tiffany. map

William Johnson House (circa 1840s) 210 State Street, Natchez, MS 39120, 601-445-5345, Part of the Natchez National Historical Park along with Fort Rosalie and Melrose, the William Johnson House was a home owned by William Johnson, a free African American barber. His lifelong diary tells the story of everyday life in antebellum Natchez. The site includes interactive exhibits, furnished family quarters, and a bookstore.
