Historic Sites & Monuments

  • Ripley Court Square (circa 1837)
    Ripley, MS
    Dating back to 1837, this square was the beginning of the small community of Ripley. It is etched in history as the place where, on November 5, 1889, Col. W. C. Falkner, great-grandfather of author William Faulkner, was shot by R. J. "Dick" Thurmond.

  • Ripley Railroad
    Cleveland Street and Railroad Avenue • New Albany, MS 38652
    In following the course of William Faulkner's family history, the railroad is an important factor. This railroad was owned and operated by the Col. W. C. Faulker, great- gradfather of author WIlliam Faulkner, during the late 1800's. Faulkner's partner in the railroad, R.J. Thurmond, would eventually gun down the Colonel over an old busines feud.  map

    Ripley Cemetary
    The twenty-two foot marble monument features the Colonel in full grandeur, but missing three fingers. Legend has it that a relative of the Colonel's killer shot off part of the hand after a night of heavy drinking. W.C. Faulkner's great-grandson, author William Faulkner, immortalized the statue by alluding to it is his work, Sartoris.  map

  • William Faulkner's Birthplace

    On September 25, 1897, William Cuthbert Faulkner, nobel prize winning author, was born in a clapboard house. He ws the first son of Murry and Maud faulkner and Murry purchased the home in 1897 after accepting a position with the Ripley Railroad. The house was demolished in the 1950's and the site is commemorated by an historical marker.  map

    Ripley is steeped in Faulkner family history, and housed in this small library are Faulkner family photographs and scrapbooks as well as first editons of the Colonel's books.  map

    Learn about the amazing history of Union County, which is known for being the birthplace of William Faulkner. His life and work are commemorated in a collection here as well as other exhibits. They are open Monday thru Friday from 8-5. In order to visit the museum on Saturday, you'll need to make an appointment.   map
