The third largest private university in North Carolina, this university was founded in 1889 and is a coeducational liberal arts college associated with the United Church of Christ. A wide range of academic and campus activities are available and there are competitive teams in 16 intercollegiate sports on site. The McCrary Theatre and the Whitley Auditorium are also on site that offer a variety of lectures, performances, and music programs that are open to the public.
