Built during the winter of 1883-84 of ponderosa pine logs, the Maltese Cross Cabin was Theodore Roosevelt's first home in Dakota territory. It was originally located about seven miles south of Medora in the wooded bottom-lands of the Little Missouri River. Guided tours of the cabin next to the South Unit Visitor Center are scheduled daily from mid-June through Labor Day. A number of items in the cabin, including a hutch in the living room and a trunk in the bedroom, belonged to Theodore Roosevelt.
