At the Missouri-Yellowstone confluence, Fort Buford was "a major link in American military strategy of the 19th century." Established in 1866, Fort Buford would house six companies of infantry and cavalry. African-American servicemen, called "buffalo soldiers" by the Indians; were stationed here from 1891 to 1895. Fort Buford soldiers patrolled the international boundary, guarded railway construction crews, and provided escorts for steamers and wagon trains. Fort Buford was abandoned in 1895. This site contains an officer-of-the-guard house, a marked cemetery, stone powder magazine, museum exhibits, an original officers’ quarters building and more. Each July, the 6th Infantry reenactment group holds an encampment at Fort Buford. Fort Buford is open from mid-May through mid-September.
