The second tallest lighthouse in the United States, the Barnegat Lighthouse was put into commission in 1859. It aided vessels in navigating and negotiating the treacherous shoals in the area before being decommissioned in 1944. Depending on the weather, the lighthouse is open daily from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. April 1 through October 31. During the remainder of the year, the lighthouse is open Wednesday through Sunday, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
