Overlooking the Shrewsbury River, Sandy Hook, Raritan Bay, New York skyline and the Atlantic Ocean 200 feet above sea level, Twin Lights had been used as the primary lighthouse for New York Harbor since 1828 before it was decommissioned in 1949. The current lighthouse was built of local brownstone in 1862. Twin Lights is listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places.
