A National Historic Landmark designed by Robert Mills, "America’s first native-born and trained architect;" the Burlington County Prison was considered "a fine example of innovative interior planning, fireproofing, heating and ventilation systems and the growing notion of social responsibility to rehabilitate criminals." It remained in constant use until 1965. The oldest continually used prison in the United States is open Thursday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sundays.
