I am fascinated by the Shroud. This museum touches me because my good friend Pete Schumacher, the production engineer for the VP8 Image Analyzer which showed the brightness map clearly in a visual way, opened the museum and asked me to create the website. After creating the site, I realized I knew almost nothing about the subject and this caused me problems in adding information and links to the site. Everything I found I had to vet through Pete because I had no idea how to distinguish reliable from the bogus information.

I have spent nearly the last three years learning about the Shroud. I read books and have been here for most of the major talks by the present Shroud researchers, but one of the biggest projects that helped me learn about the Shroud was taking a 30-slide presentation done by Christa, a home schooled high school student, and reworking that using IT standards to create the slideshows available on the site which provides categories of information on the Shroud.

While the presentation is by no means exhaustive, be it viewed in the category slides or in the total file (130+ slides), one can get a good introduction to learn about this relic and decide for oneself what to think about it.

If you think you might be interested in the multidisciplinary studies that have been done about the Shroud and want to see and interact with the VP8 Image Analyzer and walk right up to a full-size transparency of the Shroud and take a negative photo with your phone and hear interesting talks and watch movies about the Shroud which are are provided admission-free, come on down and take a look. Some come for a few minutes and end up there for several hours.

Four years after writing the review above, the museum which was housed in the Mall rent free by its owner is at a new location, space generously donated by folks who live in Alamogordo. While smaller, the museum is very cozy and still, after all these years, is still free.

After being ordained a Deacon, I find my studies in the Shroud support and assist me in preaching. The information about the Shroud is invaluable for personal faith, historical research, scientific study, the history of art and other disciplines. Sometimes we will have x-ray techs from the local hospital visit and they confirm the Shroud has x-ray properties in addition to all the other interesting properties of this image on the very surface of a flax linen cloth.

When I say surface, I mean each cell of the linen is like a straw. Only one side of the cell is discolored to make up the image and that, only to a depth of 10 nanometers. So if someone were to get to the Shroud with a razor blade, running it over the surface would destroy the image. Where the image itself appears on the Shroud the discoloration is like it aged differently, like that process was sped up, in places where the image is compared to where the image is not. There is similar (not the same) discoloration around the burn marks, but obviously heat like a burn could not account for the image because in producing the image, the linen would be damaged beyond repair. Chemically according to Ray Rogers, wold-class pyrolysis chemist, the cloth is not damaged in this way where the image exists on the Shroud.
