Originally known as the Montezuma Hotel, the Montezuma Castle was designed by Chicago architects John Root and Daniel Burnham for the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad. The hotels' notable visitors included Rutherford B. Hayes, Ulysses S. Grant, William Tecumseh Sherman, and Theodore Roosevelt. It has been recognized by the National Trust for Historic Preservation recognized as one of America's most endangered historic places and the White House Millennium Council named it one of “America’s Treasures,” the first property west of the Mississippi to receive that honor. It now serves as an international center with student and faculty housing, dining facilities, offices, a campus store, and student social center for the Armand Hammer United World College of the American West. The City of Las Vegas Museum and Rough Rider Memorial Collection educates visitors on the history of Las Vegas, its connection to the Rough Riders, the Santa Fe Trail and the development of New Mexico.
